Returns Rise 1.3 Percent

Tax American FlagIncome tax returns received by the Internal Revenue Service  for the season February 24 were 1.3 percent more than the total through Feb. 23, 2023. Meanwhile, efiles filed by tax pros surpassed those from DIYers.

The IRS reported it has received 45,983,000 returns for the period reported, compared to 45,413,000  for last year’s corresponding period.

There were 44,962,000 efiles accepted for this year’s reported period, up 1.5 percent from 44,293,000 in last year’s corresponding period.  Paid preparers submitted 20,239,000  efiles, an increase of 6.1 percent from 20,239,000. The number of efiles self-prepared dropped 1.9 percent 24,723,000 to 25,211,000.

Average returns continued to last 2022 totals. This year’s average returns to date was $3,079, down 11.3 percent from $3,473. Direct deposits continued to increase, rising 14.3 percent 33,377,000 from 29,190,000
