Block to Add 100 Locations

H&R Block logoTax preparation chain H&R Block is continuing with modest expansion to its store network. The Kansas City, Mo.-based company said it plans to add 100 franchise locations to its 11,000-network. That compares to the 120 it added last year.

The company says it has two business models for franchise operators. One is for independent tax business owners who want to convert their location into an H&R Block franchise. The other model is for the owners who are ready to retire or are looking for an exit strategy and want to sell their businesses.

Block is also offering company-owned offices for sale as franchised locations to independent tax business owners who convert their businesses.

The franchises are touted as offering an advantage to store operators because of the training and testing requirements being imposed on tax preparers by the Internal Revenue Service. The company says it can provide training to help professionals and franchisees prepare for and pass competency exams.

Block says the average franchisee owns three locations and has been with the program for more than 19 years.
