ADP: 20 Million Jobs Lost in April

There were 20,236,000 jobs lost in April in nonfarm private employment, Automatic Data Processing reported this week. Among sectors, service providing jobs led the decline with 16,007,000 individuals let go.

The numbers were reported in the ADP National Employment Report for April.

 Not surprisingly,  leisure and hospitality  led the decline with  a loss of 8,607,000 positions. The second-largest drop came in trade/transportation/utilities  which saw 3,440,000 jobs disappear.Job losses by other specific sectors in declining order were construction, 2,477,000; manufacturing, 1,674,000; professional/business services, 1,167,000.  There was also a 1,298,000-job decline in “other services”.

In terms of business size, those companies with 1,000 or more employees eliminated 7,621,000 workers; 50 to 499 employees, 5,269,000 jobs; one to 19 employees, 3,361,000 jobs; 20-49 employees, 2,644,000, 500 to 999 employees, 1,342,000.
