Preparer Took Part in Stolen Car Biz

A Lawrenceville, Ga.-based tax preparer has been sentenced to five years in prison in a scheme that recruited his clients to help purchase stolen cars for resale.  Stanley Worthy Jr. must make $2.9 million in restitution after pleading guilty to a variety of charges.

Worthy had earlier pleading guilty to wire fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud and aiding in the filing of 35 false tax returns.

In 2019 and 2020, Worthy and co-conspirator used the Soamazin Automotive car dealership, in Warrensville Heights, Ohio to purchase stolen vehicles at a discount, and sell those vehicles to unsuspecting buyers for profit/

They also had recruited clients from this tax preparation business, Cavalier Care, apply for loans to buy non-existent vehicles and split loan proceeds.
