IRS Rolls Out Fast Track Settlement

IRSThe Internal Revenue Service has introduced Fast Track Settlement, a program designed to enable small businesses undergoing an audit to settle issues. The program is designed for small businesses and self-employed individuals who are under examination by the Small Business/Self Employed Division of the IRS.

A similar program has previously been available for companies with more than $10 million in assets. The program offers alternative dispute resolution techniques to help taxpayers save time and avoid a formal administrative appeal or lengthy litigation. The IRS says audit issues can usually be settled within 60 days. If taxpayers choose this option, they still have the right to appeal if the process is unsuccessful.

FTS is jointly administered by SB/SE and the IRS Appeals office. Taxpayers with issues in dispute work with IRS representatives from the SB/SE's Examination Division and Appeals to resolve those issues, with the Appeals representative serving as mediator.
