IRS Adds Features to Online Accounts

IRSThe Internal Revenue Service has added several features to online accounts for individual taxpayers, including the ability to view up to 18 months of tax payment history. They can also see payoff amounts and tax balances due for each tax year via the accounts.

Other new features for the accounts, which were first launched in December. include the ability to obtain online transcripts of various Form 1040-series through Get Transcript and to give feedback on their experiences with their accounts and make suggestions for improvements.

To access the tool, taxpayers must authenticate their identities through a Secure Access process. This incorporates his a two-step authentication process under which users must have usernames and passwords along with a security code texted to their mobile phones.

The IRS will send verification, activation or security codes via email and text. The agency notes it will not initiate contact via text or email asking for log-in information or personal data. The IRS texts and emails will only contain one-time codes.
