IRS: Virtual Settlement Month a Success

The Internal Revenue Service has deemed its first National Virtual Settlement Month in March a success. The agency said the effort led to the settlement of 148 Tax Court cases in the 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Having a settlement month followed on Settlement Days and Virtual Settlement Days. The IRS said the Virtual Settlement Days had ended with 260 taxpayers resolving Tax Court cases, avoiding the need for trials all those cases.

In March, nearly 240 taxpayers met with employees of the IRS’ Office of Chief Counsel and with pro bono organizations .The IRS says those taxpayers whose cases were not resolved “had the opportunity to obtain free legal advice and better understand their cases and the process of litigating in the Tax Court.”

The Office plans to continue Virtual Settlement Days events together with face-to-face options when possible. Meanwhile, those with cases before the Tax Court are encouraged to contact assigned Chief Counsel attorney or paralegal about participating in such an event.

During these virtual meetings, LITC representatives and ABA volunteer attorneys provided free legal advice. Taxpayers were also able to discuss payment options with IRS Collection employees and con to consult Taxpayer Advocate Service employees about tax matters not before the Tax Court.
