Returns Slightly Above 2021

The latest weekly statistical filing report from the Internal Revenue Service report shows the total number of returns for the season through June 12 less than half a percent higher than the yea-ago season through July 17. There were 152,465,000 returns field for the year to date compared to 151,782,000 through last year’s extended deadline.

 It is the latest news from the IRS whose statistics cover two tax seasons with different filing deadlines. The compared periods have the number of efiles down 1.8 percent to 140,860,000 from 143,379,000.

The difference stems from a self-prepared efiles. There were 64,984,000 through June 11,  off 6.6 percent from  69,573,000 at the end of the 2020 filing season Tax professionals submitted 75,876,000 returns, up 2.8 percent from 73,806,000 for the year-ago period. This may reflected individuals who did were not required to file a return but last year filed to receive government funds.
