AICPA Urges IRS Halt Compliance Actions

The American Institute of CPAs is calling on the Department of Treasury to halt compliance actions until the Internal Revenue Service can devote “the necessary resources for timely resolution of issues.”

That is one of the recommendations made by the AICPA in light of Treasury officials acknowledging tax season will be “frustrating”. Other actions proposed include providing taxpayers with a simplified abatement process; and targeted relief from underpayment and late payment of tax penalties for the 2020 and 2021 tax years.

In the letter to the agency, AICPA CEO Barry Melancon said these “are all actions the IRS can take right now.” Melancon noted, “For more than 18 months, the AICPA has repeatedly and publicly recommended to the IRS that they take reasonable actions that would meaningfully reduce persistent, unnecessary and erroneous notifications and help American taxpayers.”
