Initial contact letters are being revised by the Internal Revenue Service Independent Office of Appeals. The agency said this week it has made two keys revisions following feedback from taxpayers and practitioners.
First, the initial letter will clarify that taxpayers and representatives can choose to meet with Appeals via by telephone, video or in-person. Appeals can also work with them via mail or secure electronic messaging.
Second, letters will now provide the name and phone number of the Appeals Officer's manager, along with the Appeals Officer’s contact information.
These letters are utilitied in most cases received by Appeals, including RS examination determination, penalties, an offer in compromise, a request for a Collection Due Process hearing or participation in IRS e-file.
