IRS Refunding Preparer Test Fees
The Internal Revenue Service is refunding fees for those who registered for the tax return preparer test. The tests were cancelled after a court ruled the IRS had no legal authority to require registration of certain paid professionals under its registered tax return preparer program.
The agency said fees collected for those who had test appointments and for those who tested on or after January 18, the date the court enjoined the test, are being refunded. Email notifications are being made to those who are to receive refunds to explain the process. No application is necessary to receive refunds. The IRS expects all refunds will be processed by July 19.
The court decision was appealed on March 29. On February 1, the court noted the order does not affect the requirement for all paid tax return preparers to obtain a preparer tax identification number.
