According to the Justice Department, Hoang, who was both a CPA and an attorney, operated John T. Hoang CPA and was one of two partners of Tax-Smart Technology Services, which operated in District of Columbia and Fairfax, Va.
Despite the businesses' earning about $1 million in revenue in 2004, $2 million in 2005 and $3 million in 2006, Hoang did not file federal income tax returns or pay any taxes for himself or his firms for those years.
The firms filed hundreds of federal income tax returns during that time. Hogan admitted preparing fraudulent forms for the same years. He admitted filing at least 24 returns in which the tax loss was greater than $30,000 for each return.
