A preparer who operated a tax business in Kansas City, Kan., has been sentenced to eight years in prison. Reece pleaded guilty in October to aiding and assisting in the preparation and filing of false and fraudulent tax returns. Besides using a variety of techniques to boost client refunds, he passed the returns off as self-prepared to conceal his role as preparer.
From about 2013 through 2015, he actions caused a tax loss of between $550,000 and $1.5 million. He prepared returns that claimed false business income and losses, medical and dental expense deductions, job-related expenses, charitable donations and other fraudulent items.
