The House Ways and Means Committee wants the Internal Revenue Service to say if the April 15 tax filing deadline should be extended. The committee this week sent the IRS the letter asking about a possible extension because of the coronavirus outbreak.
In the letter, the committee said “we are concerned about the ability of the IRS to provide taxpayer assistance and process returns, as well as the ability of taxpayers, free tax preparation sites, and tax professionals to meet the filing deadline.”
The committee also asked the IRS to consider penalty relief from “certain filing and payment penalties for taxpayers and communities impacted by COVID-19.”
