Intuit is taking orders for an EMV Reader that will be necessary for businesses when a new credit card standard goes into effect in October. The new standard—short for Europay, MasterCard and Visa—provides credit and debit cards with embedded chips. ntuit notes businesses must be able to accept EMV cards or they will be responsible for fraudulent card-present transactions that occur when customers are using chip-based cards.
The system enhances to the security provided by the magnetic strips on the back of cards by adding a unique identifier for each transaction.
Intuit said the QuickBooks Mobile EMV Card Reader, available for pre-order, is easy to set up, small enough to carry and integrates sales transactions within QuickBooks Online, as well as with QuickBooks Desktop using QuickBooks GoPayment. Intuit is charging $30 for the reader.
Intuit is also providing a guide to EMV migration for small businesses on its website.
