Intuit is taking its GoPayment mobile credit card app and card reader global with its first move into another country--into Canada. The company also said it would begin shipping a free re-designed card reader in both the United States and Canada. The Canadian products are scheduled to be available early this year. No schedule was discussed for releasing the app in other countries.
GoPayment in Canada will initially be compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices. The card reader will be available in both countries. It attaches to the audio jack of iOS and Android devices. It has a silicon sleeve to keep the reader from moving or spin when a card is being swiped. Intuit said it has also improved the swipe channel to read cards accurately the first time by putting it on an angle, beveling it and making it longer.
GoPayment has no start-up or equipment costs or long-term contracts. There are also no monthly fees for those doing less than $1,000 business per month. Users pay a fee per transaction. It has two plans. Under the low-volume plan, the swipe rate is 2.7 percent and the keyed rate 3.7 percent of the transaction. For the high-volume plan, there is a $12.95 per month fee with the swipe rate falling to 1.7 percent and the keyed rate to 2.7 percent.
