Disruption, Outcome Leaders: Thoughts for 2016

We're only 19 days into the new year and already my clients (accounting firms) have provided the following insights for me. 1. Being a 'thought leader' isn't a term that brings clients the results they need in their practices. Being an 'outcome leader' does.

2. 'Disruption' is today's business buzzword and tomorrows' commercial cliché. The most successful firms I've seen use timeless effective language to communicate with clients and prospects alike.

3. Software solutions have failed to ignite growth in accounting firms over the years because the software has not been implemented ... because behaviors for doing so are not developed ... because innovation is not encouraged ... because time-based billing demands the prioritization of deliverables ... because tradition has always trumped 'tomorrow' ... because functions and fear freeze fees ... because value isn't valued and therefore profitability is often pulverized and so we turn to software solutions to remedy that.

4. Promotion to partnership is almost never the result of one career-changing decision but rather a series of small but intelligent decisions made by a diligent and loyal senior manager over the course of time.

5. Senior managers accelerate their progression in the firm by understanding marketing and then helping the partners to understand it
