PTIN Renewal Notices Sent
WASHINGTON - The Internal Revenue Service has begun reminding about 1 million tax return preparers to renew their Preparer Tax Identification Numbers as use of the numbers will be required on all federal returns signed by paid tax return preparers starting January 1.
Preparers can register via a PTIN sign-up system available at www.IRS.gov/taxpros after creating an account, completing the PTIN application and paying a $64.25 fee before getting their PTINs. The IRS plans to mail 125,000 notification letters each week for eight weeks to those who already have PTINs. Registrants will generally be reassigned the same numbers they have held.
