Preparer Stole Pension Checks

 Cash bagA Chicago, Ill., tax preparer, who embezzled her deceased grandmother’s pension checks, has been sentenced to seven years in prison. The preparer, Eunice Salley, must pay $558,369 in restitution to the United States.

Eunice Salley was also convicted of filing 22 false client tax returns that sought more than $1 million in undeserved refunds. Trial evidence show she prepared about 22 fraudulent client returns in 2016 and 2017.

Salley asked clients for as much as 50 percent of the refunds.

She also cashed 33 monthly pension checks, totaling $14,131, that he been sent to her grandmother, who died in 2009. Testimony showed Salley submitted notarized affidavits to the pension plan administrator, that she signed in her grandmother’s name.

In 2017, Salley did not report about $5,000 income she received from the pension checks from the American Can Co.
