Former B'Nai B'rith Prez Guilty of Tax Fraud

Dennis GlickA Pennsylvania CPA, the former president of B'nai B'rith, faces a possible 15 years in prison and a $1.5 million fine for preparing false tax returns. A federal jury in Philadelphia this week convicted Dennis Glick of Huntingdon Valley, Pa., for preparing the returns and trying to obstruct and impede internal revenue laws.

AICPA Nixes 3 Percent Withholding

aicpa logoThe American Institute of Certified Public Accountants is supporting the repeal of a law that requires withholding of 3 percent of payments made to government contractors, as well as certain other payments such as Medicare. The AICPA said it supports H.R. 674 which would repeal the requirement passed by Congress in 2005. Federal, state and local governments were affected by the law.

N.J. CPA Charged in $670M Fraud

A New Jersey accountant who acted as an outside auditor for a Costa Rican firm faces additional charges for his part in an alleged $670 million fraud. Jorge Castillo, 56, an inactive CPA, and Minor Vargas Calvo, 60, president of Costa Rican-based Provident Capital Indemnity, were hit with charges this month under a superseding indictment.
