The number of income tax returns received by the Internal Revenue Service through March 29 topped the number received through March 31, the first time this season’s reported results have exceeded those in 2023.
The IRS received 90,315,000 returns for the season-to-date, an increase of .2 percent over 90,111,000 a year ago. Efiles reached 87,369,000 through March 29, up .3 percent over 87,126,000 in last year’s corresponding period.
The total was the result of a 1.1-percent increase in self-prepared efiles to 41,068,000, compared to 40,609,000 a year earlier. The numbers from paid preparers continued to lae 2023 results with the 46,302,000 efiles from that category .5-percent lower than 46,302,000 received through March 31, 2023.
The number of refunds issued continued to be lower than last year’s totals, but the gap has been rapidly closing. There were 58,126,000 refunds issued this season, 4.5-percent fewer than the 60,867,000 a year earlier
