The Internal Revenue Service and Free File Inc. have agreed to extend the Free File program through October 2029. The program is in its twenty-second filing season.
Via Free File, eligible taxpayers can file prepare and file their taxes at no cost.
Available on IRS.gov, the program saw 2.9 million returns filed through the program this year, a 7.3-percent increase from the 2.7 filed in last year’s corresponding period. Free File remains available through the October 15 extension filing deadline
Eight companies provide free use of their tax software products to any taxpayer with an Adjusted Gross Income of $79,000 or less in 2023. Those with higher incomes can still use the Free File Fillable forms.
The companies participating in Free File are 1040Now, Drake (1040.com), ezTaxReturn.com. FileYourTaxes.com, On-Line Taxes, TaxAct. TaxHawk (FreeTaxUSA) and TaxSlayer.
