The assets of NextPoint Financial, parent of chain Liberty Tax, have been sold after approval by a Canadian Court and under Chapter 15 bankruptcy in the United States.
Liberty and Canadian Community Tax will continue to operate under the ownership of BP Commercial Funding Trust, Series SPL-X
The action was spurred by NextPoint’s disastrous acquisition of LoanMe, which was supposed to be operated in tandem with Liberty as a one-stop consumer operation. NextPoint purchased both LoanMe and Liberty in 2021 but shuttered LoanMe for new loans in July 2023. NextPoint sued AmeriFirst Home Improvement Finance seeking millions of dollars in damage for the alleged failure of AmeriFirst to live up to the terms of a loan servicing contract.
LoanMe, which had continued to service existing loans, will be wound down. NextPoint’s announcement said there would be no assets to distribute to creditors

The Internal Revenue Service, which issued few numbers about tax season results in 2013 until the season ended, has been publishing them regularly this year. And for the season through February 21, the number of returns processed and the amount of refunds issue continue to show double-digit gains over the prior year.
Intuit: 550 Enrolled in CPA Select
Intuit has 550 CPAs participating in its TurboTax CPA Select program, the company said in a recent earnings webcast. Begun last year, the program is in what CEO Brad Smith this week called a “full live beta” test. Although he did not quantify results during the earnings presentation, Smith said, “We like the early results of this experiment.”
Liberty Tax Customers Up 7.2 Percent

The number of customers served by Liberty Tax Service through February 15 is about 7.2 percent higher than in the 2013 tax season. The report was made this week by Liberty's parent JTH Holding. The company said the increase came while the number of locations were down by 2 percent over the prior year.

The Internal Revenue Service seemed to be working its way through a backlog of individual tax returns during the last week. Meanwhile, the number of returns prepared professionally remained down. For tax season from January 31 through February 14, receipts were down slightly - off .8 percent - but the number of returns processed were 24.8-percent higher than in the corresponding period of the 2102 tax season, according to this week's IRS report.
Georgia Tax Pro Gets 33-Month Term

A former professional tax preparer in Georgia has been sentenced to serve 33 months in prison in a case in which three other colleagues have already received sentences. Irene Tamika Smith, worked at Quick Tax in Cordele, Ga., drew the term from her actions in the tax seasons from 2006 through 2009.

The delayed tax filing season has produced an increase in the number of returns submitted to the Internal Revenue Service. The IRS has reported the overall number of returns processed up by 3.8 percent. But that is on the strength of self-prepared returns as the number submitted by tax professionals is off by 5.6 percent.
Court Upholds Ban on Preparer Regulation

An appellate court has upheld a lower court ruling that struck down the attempt by the Internal Revenue Service to regulate professional tax return preparers. The ruling means the attempt to impose examinations and educational requirements remains dead under the current law.

The Justice Department went after tax preparers in three states last week in efforts to shutter individuals and business it claimed abused the tax return process. The court actions included the effort to close down Salt Lake City, Utah, preparers Rulon Sandoval, Andrea R. Acosta Hernandez and Latinos Office for allegedly fabricating deductions, falsely claiming tax credits and using false preparer identification numbers.
Georgia Preparer Draws Federal Ban

A Georgia tax preparer who operates a Liberty Tax store has been permanently banned from preparing federal income tax returns for others. The Department of Justice alleges that the actions of Joan Leger of Stone Mountain, Ga., may have cost the United States more than $2 million in lost tax revenue.

It would be nearly impossible to tell you threw out the first return to start the 2014 tax season. Preparers have been working on returns for some days. But after a delay stemming from the government shut down last year, the Internal Revenue Service began processing returns on January 31.
