A Georgia tax preparer has been sentenced to 137 months in prison after begin convicted of conspiracy and filing fraudulent tax returns. Tyrone Thompson was the last of five defendants in the case to be sentenced. He was also ordered to pay $516,363 in restitution to the IRS.
In October, the five defendants pleaded guilt to filing false claims for refunds with Thompson also pleading guilty to conspiracy.
His actions included using the names of other individuals to file returns and claiming bogus Schedule C business income and losses along with First-Time Homebuyer Credits to which he and other defendants were not entitled.
Thompson was found to have deposited more than $400,000 in refunds in the bank accounts of the co-defendants, Aritha Currie, Julius Thompson, Tronda Thompson and Shonda Sneed. The government press releases about the indictments and conviction do not indicate if the Thompsons are related.
