Sage North America has allied with the Business Learning Institute, an affiliate of the Maryland Association of CPAs, to provide courses for accountants. The new curriculum is marketed as The Competitive Edge for Accounting Professionals: Value Beyond Tax and Compliance Services.

Baton Rouge, La., resident Angela Myers has been sentenced to 11 years in federal prison for wire fraud, making false claims, subscribing to false tax returns and aggravated identity theft. Myers, who operated Angie’s Tax Service, was found guilty of running an ID theft scheme with many of the victims nursing home patients.

Sales-and-use tax software company Avalara has named Peter Horadan to the new position of EVP of engineering. It was the latest in a series of additions to the exeuctive staff this year for Bainbridge Island, Wash.-based Avalara.
