Five Easy Tech Tweaks to Improve Your Business

improve art"Our software is terrible!" "Our systems are out of date!" "We need something that's more user-friendly." I hear this pretty frequently. And mostly it's not true. It's an excuse. The truth is that most business software that's on the market today, particularly if it's from a long time and reputable vendor, is good and likely able to do the job that it was intended for. Usually when there's a problem it's not a software problem. It's a people problem.

The Improbable Dream: True Software Integration

puzzle artWhen I started my company back in 1994 I could only dream of certain things.  I dreamed of no longer having to wear a "pager" when someone needed to contact me. I dreamed of not being forced to find a payphone to call clients when out of the office. I dreamed of a lighter laptop computer with more power that was easier to use.

Big Data Tops Scale in AICPA Top Tech Lists

Donny ShimamotoManaging and retaining data emerged as the No. 1 issue in the Top Technology Initiatives of the American Institute of CPAs. It was only the second time in the last 10 years that information security was not the top issue. And the reason, according to Donny Shimamoto, chair of the AICPA's Information Management Technology Assurance Committee, is big data. The other big change was that overall survey participants are less confident in achieving goals for the Top 10 issues. Read more...

For 2012, The Cloud Got a C+

cloud cryingHas this ever happened to you? You're sitting in an airport (in my case at the moment it's the Philadelphia airport) and you try fruitlessly for an hour to connect to your cloud-based server because that's where everything is nowadays. It's in "The Cloud." But...uh-oh...the router or something isn't available. And neither is your Verizon 3G-or-4G-or whateverG-service. You're dead in the water. You've been there, right? That's where I am right now. Luckily, I'm able to do something else. I have a local version of Microsoft Office installed on my laptop. That way I can write this essay. Maybe you're that fortunate. Maybe you're not. Chances are you've been rendered, once again, unproductive. Read more...

Turn CRM into More than a Rolodex

crm art"We hate our CRM system. It's terrible. No one is using it. We need a better one." "Can you recommend a CRM system that is more user friendly?" "Our CRM system? It's nothing more than a glorified rolodex!" Sound familiar? It should. I hear these complaints all the time - both from clients and non-clients. Their complaints about their CRM (that's Customer Relationship Management) systems are not only untrue, but misleading. I'm tired of hearing them. I'm bored of the excuses. I'm sick of the whining. Little-known Technologies: Big Impact on Business

zioskA few weeks ago I had a British experience at Pizzeria Uno's near Boston. No, they weren't serving fish and chips. On each table at the restaurant was a little wireless device. When I was done eating I paid for my meal by using the device. No server was involved. I say this was a British experience because every time I visit my wife's family in London. my kids drag us to the local Pizza Express restaurant. Read more...
