Tax season 2017 took a step backward as it went into the last weekend. After a season marked by week-by-week improvement, most figures from the Internal Revenue Service for the season through April 14 fell behind the corresponding period ended April 15, 2016.
Xero Debuts Software That Learns

Xero has introduced machine learning automation into its cloud-based financial software. The company says that the new technology means that the software will learn to perform such tasks as recording invoices against the proper account without business owners having to worry about making a mistake.

Xero has established the position of chief partner officer. The company recently named Anna Curzon to the new role. Curzon had served as managing director for New Zealand for the last year for the cloud software accounting company.

A former Queens, N.Y., tax preparer has pleaded guilty to using a variety of bogus deductions to inflate client tax returns. Vanya Thompson, 39, who operated tax businesses under a variety of names, admitted falsifying items on returns, which the Depature of Justice said produced a tax loss of $250,000.
Long Way to Go In Audit Data Analytics
Data analytics and data visualization promise a new way of conducting audits. But there is a lot of work to be done to develop the technology and prove the validity of these techniques in replacing traditional audit methodology. Sage One Struggles In the U.S.
Sage's low-end cloud accounting software, Sage One, has improved performance around the world. However, it continues to struggle in the market in the United States. Still in reporting its fiscal 206 results, the company expressed confidence that the product's reputation has been improving as measured by Net Promoter Scores.
Intacct Moving to In-Memory Database
Intacct is preparing to utilize an in-memory database for its online applications. At the company's recent Advantage conference. Chief technology officer Aaron Harris said a limited release of the technology, which promises substantially increases in calculation speed, will be introduced early next year.

The Fourth Annual Accounting Firms Open and Annual Technology Survey has been launched. Besides asking for input on current practices, authors Randy Johnston and Leslie Garrett say besides compiling that data, they will publish a three-year analysis of accounting firm software application usage based on the past surveys.
