Paychex moved forward in single-digit increases in net income, payroll revenue and total revenue for the third quarter ended February. The company also said this week that client retention remains at near-record levels as it completed its peak selling season for payroll services during the current fiscal year.

Low-cost accounting software vendor Xero plans a significant expansion of features in its online product in 2013. The broader capability is designed to bring the product more to the level of those from other players in the field, according to CEO Rod Drury.
A Georgia tax preparer has been sentenced to 137 months in prison after begin convicted of conspiracy and filing fraudulent tax returns. Tyrone Thompson was the last of five defendants in the case to be sentenced. He was also ordered to pay $516,363 in restitution to the IRS.
