The Importance of Technology in an Accounting Firm
Over the years, Gary Boomer's proselytizing about properly funding technology in a tax and accounting firm has had many variations. But judging from his presentation at a session at the annual CCH User Conference yesterday, one thing hasn't changed: Firms still don't know what they are spending for technology. Another thing should probably be added is that it isn't enough, especially in the soft costs, which are areas that get whittled away during a recession.
The Importance of Twitter to Accountants

Being a self-proclained “novice” regarding the benefits these services can provide to your business is not uncommon, as most business owners see Twitter as a form of keeping in touch with friends of family members. It still remains an engine that “only college students, teenagers, or the very tech savvy use.”

OoVoo is a funny name for a company. It’s serious service is to deliver a simple tool to support video communication. What should be no surprise is that there are two options, free and premium for a fee. After installation, ooVoo provides easy access to the world of video calls. It has a feature to test the settings on your Webcam. When that is done the simple way to begin is to connect with a fellow ooVoo user. With the free version, this should not be difficult.
The free level supports one to one conversations. The premium version supports up to six concurrent users. This could be very effective for team meetings and client calls. If one of the participants on the call does not have ooVoo installed, you can set up a web interface on the ooVoo server so that the user can sign in to a specific URL and be connected on the call.
Making a Fuss Out of SaaS
It was interesting, and unexpected, when the three top players in professional tax preparation decided that this year is the time to make a bigger noise about online professional tax preparation.
In fact, it was very unexpected that at the Illinois CPA Society's Midwest Accounting and Financial Showcase that both Intuit and CCH would make announcements. Intuit had been making announcements on the order of Hansel and Gretel dropping bread crumbs to mark a trail.
But CCH decided this year it was the place to talk about the delivery schedule of its online version of ProSystem fx Tax, along with other applications. These moves are detailed in "Online Tax: the Future Is Now?" in this issue. Call it what you want - Software-as-a-Software service, ASP (I like the simple Internet-based myself)- the fact that CCH, Thomson Reuters and Intuit have all put their plans on the table means they've decided that acceptance of online applications has gotten to the point, it's worth try to sell them more aggressively.

With the right technology, you can teach an old dog new tricks.
I was a tax professional for most of my public accounting career. I started in tax and still did taxes for my computer consulting clients when I finally made the switch into technology about 10 years ago. Recently I decided to try my hand at doing some tax work during busy season. I knew I would need a skilled reviewer and time to review tax law changes, but I was afraid I wouldn’t know how to work the applications. (You would be surprised how many laws haven’t changed very much, except for that new fangled Single Member LLC concept…)
Imagine my surprise, when after 10 years of being away from tax preparation and working papers, I was able to sit down and get up and going with no training on the software. Read more...

CUPERTINO, Calif. – Symantec, which makes anti-malware software, has identified the 100 “Dirtiest Web Sites of Summer 2009," the 100 sites with the most threats detected by site ratings service, Norton Safe Web, as of August.
Forty-eight of these sites feature adult content. But the vendor said the list ranged in subject matter from sites dedicated to deer hunting, catering, figure skating, legal services, to buying electronics. Visiting sites, even without downloading or clicking on any element, can expose a user’s computer to infection or data theft. Symantec said 75 percent of these sites have distributed malware for more than six months.
The company posted the URLs for 30 sites, which include kingfamilyphotoalbum.com, wadefamilytree.org; texaswhitetailfever.com a divineenterprises.net, likaraoke.com. Ratings were based on the number of threats detected by Norton Safe Web, which crawls the Web looking for dangerous sites. Safe Web analyzes Web sites using signature-based file scanning, intrusion detection engines, behavioral detection and install/uninstall analysis to identify security risks including phishing sites, malicious downloads, browser exploits and links to unsafe external sites. Judging from the names, the published list does not include many of the adult sites.
