Accountants in all facets of the profession continue to adopt PDF files as the foundation of their document storage and management platforms. Further, PDF files increasingly serve as a medium for exchanging information between accountants and their peers, clients, customers, vendors, and other trading partners. Unfortunately, many professionals using PDF technologies continue to labor under the erroneous assumption that PDF files are secure and others cannot change them. In fact, PDF files are unsecured by default and those using PDFs should take specific actions to secure these documents and prevent disclosing sensitive and confidential data. Fortunately, Adobe Acrobat provides a number of very good options for securing PDF documents.

To 3D or Not 3D? The hot topic at this month's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas was the coming oversupply of 3D televisions. This technology is moving from the movie theater into the home. There is not a lot of 3D content today so these screens will also show 2D, HD, Blu-Ray. For 3D, special viewing glasses are required. As these products are rolled out, the question for the consumer is simple – “why buy?” Price today for a 42” model is around $10,000. Sony has stated that by 2012 30 percent to 50 percent of its TV sales will be 3D.

Amazon is not alone anymore. The Kindle eBook now faces lots of “me too” products that all fit under this same category. The Nook from Barnes & Noble, Sony’s eBook Reader, Que from Plastic Logic are a few. By some estimates there are as many as 30 eBooks to hit the shelves this year, not including Smartphones and computer based programs. A few companies, like Marvell are reengineering the creating the chips needed which should continue to drive the price down to under $200 and lower.Read more...

Plustek has reduced the size of scanning with the MobileOffice D428. At 4x12 inches, the scanner is a very portable color duplex scanner. The D428 is roll feed so that it can scan any single page or smaller document. Its size makes it easy to travel with in a car office, or at a client site for audit support, or a private meeting with a tax client to scan papers in the old shoe box.

How Many CPAs Does It Take to Screw in a Light Bulb?

Last September, I managed to fall off a ladder while changing a light bulb in my garage. Fortunately, I landed on my backside (amply padded) so there were no broken bones or concussions. However, I failed to turn loose of the light bulb which broke and severed a tendon and nerves in the left-hand. So after fairly significant surgery, there I sat my desk, a one-armed partner who, up until that point, relied very heavily on technology.
