Wi-Fi in the Sky – An Update

wifiAdd American Airlines to the list of carriers that now offer Wi-Fi in The Sky. I'm on a three and a half hour flight and found it easier to justify the $5.95 charge for internet access.

Recently, I wrote an article called Wi-Fi in the Sky that compared the cost of this new service to the potential for improved productivity. While I'm not convinced that I will always want to be connected, it is pretty cool to think I can send emails from thirty thousand feet!

Social Networking and Your Firm

While tax and accounting professionals are not typically the first people that come to mind as leaders in adopting emerging online technology, many of them are now turning to services typically used by their kids. Facebook and MySpace, online social networking sites originally created for college students, have since grown not only in the age of its demographic, but also in the number of users utilizing it for business purposes. Accounting professionals are taking advantage of these free sites for many reasons.

Quicken to QuickBooks

Quicken logo

Business finances + personal finances = not a great situation especially when all the business’ financial data is in an accounting software such as Quicken and intermingled with personal finances. In my last blog I wrote about exporting data from an Excel spreadsheet into QuickBooks.  How do you move everything over from Quicken to QuickBooks? You can convert a Quicken file to QuickBooks through the Easy Step Interview built into QuickBooks. The conversion copies your Quicken data to a new QuickBooks company file. Your original Quicken data file doesn’t change so you can continue to use it. After converting your Quicken file, you will have two sets of data: your original, unchanged Quicken file and your new QuickBooks company file to use from that date forward. When you begin to set up any new company file in QuickBooks, make sure to have the following on hand:

Have You Bing’d?

On May 28, 2009, Microsoft unveiled Bing and described it as “a new Decision Engine and consumer brand”.  Their press release described a Decision Engine as a search tool that is “designed to empower people to gain insight and knowledge from the Web, moving more quickly to important decisions”.

It is clear that Microsoft is trying to take market share away from rival Google.

Bing includes new features that help organize search results.  The Explorer Pane is located on the left side of the search window and contains navigational and search tools.  The Related Search feature includes a list of related searches and displays on the left side of the search screen.

Bing is definitely not just another Google.  It brings lots of new features to the search tool.  Only time will tell if people really want or need a new search engine.

If you haven’t already, it’s time to give Bing a try!

Incorporating Widgets Into Your Website

A lot of accounting firm sites in the tax preparation and accounting industry suffer from a lack of dynamic content on their pages, a key component in propelling your firm higher in the ranks of search engines like Google and Yahoo.  More often than not, the static websites we see in the profession have pages that simply act as online business cards.  Essentially, these sites, while they do provide general contact information and basic biographies on the firm members, are relatively “bare bones” so far as marketing is concerned.  Incorporating web widgets into your practice’s page is an easy and free way to incorporate additional web content, ensure that it is automatically updated and therefore, search engine friendly.

Drive eRazer Ensures That Discarded Drives Are Clean

No one needs to tell you that when you get rid of a hard drive or whole computer, there'd better not be any traces of confidential client data on it. And simply deleting files doesn't hack it. Drive Erazer, from WiebeTech, can erase a 250MB drive in under two hours, the company says. You just connect it to a drive (with or without a computer) and flip a switch. The Standard version for 3.5" IDE/PATA Drives is $99.95 MSRP; prices go up to $199.95 for other drive types.

Text Messaging

Messaging is all over our universe – text, twitter, social, and even voice. Making use of this in a business context is under investigation by many sources. Most business use of text messages today centers on brand awareness from large companies selling consumer products. This is an extension of advertising campaigns.

A new service harnesses the text messaging platform for potential uses by CPAs on a business or personal basis. Cherple, www.cherple.com, provides a facility to develop truly interactive text messaging to and from mobile phones. In addition, the text message can even be sent from a computer by accessing Cherple’s website and sending a text message to a cell phone.

CPAs should always explore how to communicate with clients and staff in new and creative ways. For example, personalized text messages can replace blast emails that never get read. Sending a short message enables the receiver to respond and automatically receive an immediate follow on message with text and/or images. This process can facilitate sending images of tax or regulatory forms when the client is away from their computer. Alerts about emergencies requiring immediate response can be set up easily.

Why Incorporate an RSS Feed into Your Web Site?

One of the great things about Web site developers that work specifically within the accounting profession is that they provide Web content for you. By incorporating things like tax forms and calculators, they provide your clients with a more dynamic and useful web experience. However, this content is rarely date specific and thus often “out-of-date.” While some Web site providers refresh the content periodically, others do not. For those that don’t, a great way to incorporate fresh and automatically updated content is through RSS feeds.
