The question of what's ahead in technology in 2016 for accounting firms, compared to what's looming for consumers and other businesses are probably two different things. That was shown at last fall's Thomson Synergy conference when company talked about plans for the roll out its Onvio cloud tax and accounting suite. A lot of attendees were more worried about moving from the Creative Solutions CS application to the not-exactly new Accounting CS.

Thomson Pushes Ahead on CSA Transition
Thomson Reuters executives were talking effusively about their plans for the cloud at the company's recent Synergy user conference. But many users were far more concerned with some older technology—moving from the soon-to-be retired Creative Solutions Accounting, which hit the market in 1998, to the newer Accounting CS, which launched on May 1, 2010.

Nonprofit software vendor Blackbaud has taken steps that it says will make it easier for others to work with its software. The company is also adopting a common interface for its products as the Charleston, S.C.-based company implements a sweeping change to the way its software has dealt with the outside world.

Accounting firms are naming CPAs to technology positions as cloud-based software applications are becoming more common. CPA Donny Shimomoto managing director of Honolulu, Hawaii-based IntrapriseTechKnowlogies, believes the creation of these positions occurs as the cloud shifts pure technology functions away from firms that use web-based applications.
Xero Forcing User Password Change

A recent rash of phishing incidents has caused New Zealand cloud accounting software company Xero to warn users to change passwords. The company says there have not been major problems. But an email this week warns users that if they do not change passwords, they will be required to the next time the login.
Xero Hits 100K U.K. Subscribers

New Zealand-based Xero says it now has 100,000 subscribers for its cloud based accounting software in the United Kingdom. In a prepared statement, CEO Rod Drury said this week the company had 30,000 subscribers in that country two years ago.
Intuit Trimming 249 Jobs

Intuit is eliminating 249 jobs, mostly in the software company's Small Business Group. The company's plans become known after it recently said it would sell its DemandForce, QuickBase and Quicken operation to concentrate on its core tax and accounting business.
