SEC Restores KMJ Corbin CPA to Practice

The Securities and Exchange Commission has restored the ability of Anthony J. Price, audit partner with KMJ Corbin & Co. to practice before that body. Corbin was barred from practicing before the SEC in September 2010 for his role in the audits and reviews of the financial statements of Home Solutions of America.

Many CPAs in public practice are well acquainted with professional handbooks, such as the GAAP Guide or the Master Tax Guide. When it comes to client continuity, however, there is no stock, published guidebook for a topic that is so essential for CPA firms. Much like any of the favorite professional manuals, a guide to client continuity has to be used and not just produced and studied. It should contain core provisions for maintaining and building quality relationships, but should also have personal and individual inserts that reflect the personality and culture of the firm.

Michael Alter, long-time president of SurePayroll, has taken a position as CEO of the Tie Bar, which designs, manufactures and markets low-cost men's neckties. Alter, who had been president of SurePayroll since November 2003, took the new job this month.

Larry Cohn has become co-partner-in-charge of technology at CPA firm Sikich. Currently, Cohn is managing the practice along with long-time partner, Jeff Rudolph, who is retiring at the end of 2014. Rudolph joined Sikich in September 1998 via the merger of his business, Intelligent Computer Solutions, with the accounting firm then known as Sikich Gardner.

PlanteMoran has hired a new chief information officer, Paul Bowers. Bowers is replacing Doug Brady, the first person at the Southfield, Mich.-based firm to hold that title. Brady, who was been with the CPA firm since 1987, is retiring.
Surveys: Accountants Use the Cloud; and Don't

Call it the case of the dueling surveys. Cloud accounting company Xero says that its survey shows that 55 percent the accountants responding plan to offer cloud accounting services to clients. That comes on the heels of another survey that shows 70.5 percent of firms responding do not use any cloud accounting applications.
Jackson Hewitt Names New CEO

Jackson Hewitt Tax Service has named David Prokupek, the former CEO of Smashburger, as its new president and CEO. The company's release on the subject made no mention of his predecessor, Harry Buckley, who took over the job in 2009. Prokupek stepped down from the Smashburger job in September after holding that position since 2010.

The improving economy may cause CPAs to be overconfident about their ability to retain clients. In the 2011 PCPS CPA Firm Top Issues Survey, retention of current clients showed up on every segment's top five list, while it only made two groups' top five in 2013 (sole practitioners, and firms with 11 to 20 professionals).

We would all agree that there is no such thing as an easy tax season. Every tax season brings its highs and lows, but forces outside of our control, like government shut-downs and this winter's unpredictable weather, really put a damper on things. Over the course of more than 30 tax seasons, in public accounting and supporting my consulting clients, I have seen the benefits that come from establishing your own tax season "sanity" system.
